How to Stay Aligned with Your Goals All Year Long

Updated: Jan 6

How many times have you set goals on January 1st, only to feel overwhelmed by the time February comes? The truth is, setting goals is the easy part—sticking with them is where the magic happens.

If you’ve ever felt the frustration of watching your goals slip away, you’re not alone. Staying aligned with your goals requires more than willpower—it’s about having a clear system and practical tools to keep you grounded and focused.

Questions to ask yourself if you don't understand your values. It's ok if you don't know them off the top of your head. Values, dreams, desires all change with time.

1. Create Goals That Align With Your Values

One of the most common reasons people lose momentum is because their goals aren’t tied to what truly matters to them. Before setting new goals, take time to reflect on your core values. It's ok if you don't know them off the top of your head. Values, dreams, desires all change with time.

Quick Exercise: Write down three values that are non-negotiable in your life (e.g., family, creativity, health). Now, look at your goals. Do they align with those values? If not, tweak them to make them more meaningful.

> Tip: Download our Aligned Values Worksheet to map out your values and set goals that stick.

2. Break Down Goals Into Manageable Steps

Big goals can feel exciting but overwhelming. To stay aligned, break them down into smaller, actionable steps. Focus on what you can realistically achieve in the next week, month, or quarter.

Example: Instead of saying, “I want to improve my self-care,” try:

Week 1: Take a 15-minute walk twice a week.

Month 1: Introduce a self-care routine using simple products (like Body Butter or Floral Facial Steamers).

This approach keeps your goals from feeling daunting and helps you celebrate progress along the way.

3. Build Habits That Support Your Goals

Goals are only as strong as the habits that support them. Identify daily or weekly rituals that align with your goals.

Example Habits:

If your goal is better mental health, start journaling for 5 minutes each morning.

If your goal is more creativity, spend 15 minutes creating something small each day.

These habits don’t have to be huge—they just have to be consistent.

4. Track and Reflect Regularly

To stay aligned all year long, build in time to track your progress and reflect. This might mean setting aside 10 minutes every Sunday to review your wins, challenges, and what needs adjustment.

Here is a quick helpful question prompt that can be used to reflect: What small wins did I achieve this week, and how do they bring me closer to my larger goals?

5. Adjust Without Guilt

Life happens, and your goals may need to shift. That’s okay! Staying aligned isn’t about rigidly sticking to a plan—it’s about adapting in a way that feels true to you.

Ask yourself: Does this adjustment still align with my values and priorities? If yes, move forward with confidence.
